Finally its finished and yes it's April and this was the march craft a long. But, I haven't felt like making for such a long time...but it was great. Already started another one.

So the first craft-a-long at Misi....The theme is spring and you have to include flowers. Thought it may inspire me to actually make something. I have a few ideas buzzing around in my head. Scarf, headband, bag. Not sure. I have to now repair the spinning wheel and prepare some fleece. Its quite exciting to see the number of people that have signed up. It open to anyone you don't need to have a shop, just be a crafty person.

Its been really windy here, I have a new bush. Its a carrier bag bush.
The bad weather always makes me want to stay inside and knit. I was looking around at knitted things last night, as I couldn't sleep. Some fab things online.

From Thepinkfairycake She had made a blue one, sold within hours so I ask her to do me a brown one. Love it. It arrived this morning. Wow that lady has fast finger. As a knitter myself. It's the only knitted thing I have ever bought. She is good.

I was looking for a Valentine card for the fella, and found this. I love it its so original. Want it for me though. I do hope Men look on the handmade websites to find our gifts. Crochetflowersgarden

I love knitted bags, this is just cute. Especially as summer is coming. Its a fab price from MyBlueBeezy I am really looking forward to seeing more things in Jeanie's shop.

My blog as been very lonely, I haven't crafted for ages. WHY? Well, do you ever get that feeling, where every creative inch of you has been sucked out by life? Well, thats me at the minute. I am desperate to shake off this negative feeling, but just can't. Hence, I have had nothing to blog about. I am going to have a look round your blogs to see what you have been up too. Well finally my friends christmas present is ready, Heres the shoulder wrap to match the hat. I love it! I think I want one myself.

The pattern is a drops pattern which I found on raverly. The yarn again drops and I really like the way it knits. I would recommend !

I completed a full set the pattern had no MItts so I designed some wristwarmers myself using the cable and I think it just completes the set.

Its all packed, will give her it tomorrow hope she likes it.

WOW! What a week, I have been decorating. My daughter is turning 12 soon, and starts big school next week. So we have made over her room, so it is fitting for her turning into a little lady. Its looking lovely. We have cream walls. Pink shelves and a tiny bit of pink on the doors. She has choosen a pink chest of drawers. Then pink sparkling lamp shape, beaded blind. She is then having a deep purple bedding and curtains. Oh and the picture she conned me into buying A purple flower. The cream carpet comes on monday and I must say I love the room. In fact I want to move in myself. Its sort of grown up girlie. Really nice. I of course need to do some sewing to add the extra sparkle. We are just going through all her toys and stuff now. Sorting and throwing. Its sad but we are packing the old toys away. I am ashamed to say she has about 10 of my TINY TEARS. LOL So I am going to bath them knit them some outfits and I think They will be ebay'd.

Alas, I have done no crafting again (well decorating is crafting). I am not sure what Stella has been up too. She had listed her quilt on esty, and was making another one last time we spoke - last week. We were talking about the next blog giveaway and we are swaying towards natural dyes as the season is now upon us for all the goodies from the garden.

Well, thats it. I can't show you any pics coz my camera has got sand in!

Woo hoo, How I have missed you guys. But we're back and all is ready to GO !!!!
What been happening? Well I have done bugger all because lack of internet got me into books and I have read about 7 in the last month. Stella has been really busy making her little look-a-like troll. LOL they are brillant. Lil Kev is on holiday in Spain as we speak. She has had many orders for the little people.

Hi Guys,

Well thought I would say hello, I still have no laptop at home. :( . Missing everyone like mad. I have decided to get a new one tomorrow.

Stella has been making more little people. She is going to do a fan page for them. She is doing commission using photographs. They are so cool. I can't wait for the fan page. LIL Roy is in his own Video....lol Brillant.

Had a bit of a challenge this week. My O.H. (Kev) is in a couple of bands, and one of his band mates (Roy) asked me to make a mini him (and then a mini Kev) as he wants to make an animated music video. I've not really done charicatures of people before, plus these little fellas have to be able to stand up, sit down and move to music. All of the limbs are wired and jointed, right down to their fingers. Can't wait to see the vid. Just hope that Roy knows I don't do pretty!
I Think Kev's realised that now. He looks a bit too much like Jon Pertwee for my liking (that's his own fault for having stupid hair - he asked for white, even though his is blond???!!! So here they are, hot off the sewing machine (please excuse mess!!)

Come On You Reds! (aka Stella's Wool)

Well, here it is, better late than never! Red was a real challenge for me as it's usually a colour I blend with others, but I've had fun with it and discovered just how beautiful red can be (new convert to red!). Wish the pics were more accurate with the colours, but that's digital cameras for you! I've been mad busy for the past couple of weeks, so I decided to hand paint roving to create my red wool. I chose to use some South American lustre tops, really soft with a bit of a glow to them. I painted my roving with 3 shades of red, getting ever deeper. I love the heathering effect you get with painted roving, so, the wool isn't technically "red", but is what I call Ashes of Roses - the colours move from the palest of pink to a smokey red/grey/purple colour.

When it came to spinning I decided to add some texture to reflect the textured colours, so I spun a thick and thin single, and the plied it back with a fine spun single. The pic below shows the thick and thin single on the bobbin.

The wool is a beautiful soft chunky yarn which would look great knitted up.I loved doing it so much that I'm going to paint some batts in a different colourway to see what the effect would be.
All that's left is to pick the winner!

Hot Pink! Well its Hot and Pink. I still have no drive band for my carder so this changed my plans a little. I dyed some Lustre wool, soft beautiful, the wool I used I think is the nicest I have spun with ever!

Ok, so I dyed the wool first, a dark pink, then added some more wool half way through and then 3/4 way through to get the variety of shades.
heres the shades all spun seperatly.

I wanted a nice chunky yarn this time. I had a vision of a finsihed scarf in this.

I plied the 3 strands together. I love it so much its so soft and nice. Its going to get a wash to set the twist but its a definate chunky. I really want to keep it.

Stella will be popping hers on tomorrow and I will edit.

I have been off work this week, its been a bad asthma week for me. The pollen and such must be very high. Not sure when I will get back. Been in bed all day again. Lovely.

But we have the colours Stella pulled out RED Zoe got HOT PINK.
I am not sure if we are dreading this or really excited. Neither of us do these colours normally, we are very traditional at times. lol. But those of the colours so off we go!

Now I have 2 ideas already, not sure if they will work but I am going for it anyway.

Though I would show you some Mohair washing too.

It doesn't look too bad BUT......

Oh look how dirty it is. This is the first wash, I popped it in a net bag and put it in a bucket of extremely hot soapy water. The dirt flew off, you can't even see the mohair. I then Rinsed twice and repeated. I kept doing this until the water was completely clear. It will get washed again. Its very labour intensive this washing fibre.

Here it is drying in the sunshine. I think I am going to blend it in for this challenge.
I will now sort out any bits that aren't suitable for spinning

A big thank you to everyone who has taken part in the last 2 giveaways. Last month was hard, due to my internet and Stellas GAS LEAK. We are back on track and whilst the weather is fine and we can wash fibre we thought we would crack on.

So I have had a bad few weeks. I had no laptop so missed you all, no camera it was lost, but been busy. I apologise so much for the delay.

My first wool is a 3ply which means its 3 strands of wool plied
together, its come out as a thick dk/aran. Its a blend of natural brown/white shetland and SOYA a fantastic choclate carmel delight of yarn.

And finally my textured wool which is a blend of black welsh and super soft llama

BLOG GIVEAWAY - We didn't forget!!!!

Sorry for the delay in the next stage of the giveaway. We have both been hit with hayfever, work and, in my case workmen (there's nothing worse than sitting outside for 6 hours in the cold waiting to hear the sound of van doors closing!)

Anyway.... because of the delays and because we love them all, we decided that we would each do 3 combinations of natural colours. I think that the weight pulled from the hat was aran (please Zoe, tell me that is right!) anyway, mine are all aran weight.

From the top (one day I will figure out how to get these photos to go where I want them to)

The first is a 3 ply yarn - I've been really getting into 3 ply for a while now so I thought I would add one to this challenge. It's 1 ply oatmeal Blue Faced Leicester, 1 ply natural brown Blue Faced Leicester and 1 ply cream Cheviot. I think it will look brill knitted up!

Second from the top is the one I have nicknamed city lights. It's a 2 ply - 1 ply of Black Welsh and soya blend and 1 ply of natural black Shetland, so the soya twinkles out at random intervals!

Lastly is my ecru/ cream mix. It's a 2 ply yarn, a mix of Shetland, English Alpaca (from Daisy - thank you Daisy!) and Tussah Silk Noil for a bit of sheen and texture. it's come out lovely and soft.
Hope you have all forgiven us. We didn't forget you!

Right then, back to fleece washing. Had a delivery yesterday and I'm making hay while the sun shines!

I am not one for sewing, but I really wanted a skirt like this so the machine came out. I brought a denimn skirt and a skirt that was 6 sizes too big for me. But I loved the material. I got them from the RED CROSS. Altered them both and came up with this. I love it.

Thought I would wet your tastebuds with a little peek at some fleeces. I am not saying these will be in MY YARN but they could be.

Any you fancy? Its only a sample of the Breeds that may be used. All washed and ready for carding.

Shetland Moorit, shetland is super soft the fleece lends itself to fine spinning, which is why you get alot of sheltland shawls. This is the softest fleece of the british breeds. I love shetland for baby items.

Washed Romney Fleece, a beautiful soft fleece ideal for the beginner in washing and carding wool. It is lovely and soft. When felted it gives a textured finish.

Washed Black welsh fleece. A natural black colour, with reddish tips. from this tiny breed of sheep. An ancient breed of sheep which was around in wales in the middle ages.

Carded llama from Tollykit on misi. Super soft and flyaway, I will definately blend this to make a supersoft yarm

Well, I think its time for a new giveaway. Do you agree?
As before, we will give you a brief, So last time it was the breed of sheep, you picked the colours. This time we are changing it a little bit. We are using NATURAL colours. So you can decide if you want plain chocolates a mix of browns and creams, cream on its own, ITS UP TO YOU. Also keeping in with the natural colours. Would you like a blend of something special? Maybe some soya, tencel, camel, llama or alpacha? You could go wild and have milk protein or recycled bottle tops. We will let you know the breed next week. Then see the difference again in what we produce.

Hi, thanks for all of the comments. It's a relief to get the spinning wheel looking lovely, even though it will probably end up back in it's box again. (I have six wheels and am going to have to downsize this year I think)
Sandy (the dog)is now getting lots of attention and loving it! I have to take full responsibility for her operation. It was when the vet phoned me and asked "Do you do a lot of sewing?" that I realised I was the guilty party. She had somehow managed to lie on top of an embroidery needle and get it stuck in her chest. eek! I think the trolls and pixies are having revenge for being ignored.....
As for the wheel's name - Zoe your naming karma has left you for now! She's Eastern European, so I reckon Sasha would probaly fit best, what do you reckon?

Right, it's all done now. I've even had it up and spinning with some Wensleydale (loving washing those curls!) Sorry about scuzzy garden, it's ripe for a spring clean. I've taken a picture of the wheel with it's distaff, but dressing the flax was beyond the call of duty!

I'm off to wait for call from the vets, one of my dogs seems to have a stick lodged in her chest and they've taken her in for surgery so I'm all fingers and thumbs.

Spinning Wheel Rescue (or, that job I've been putting off for two years)

Thanks for all of the entries for our wool comp. While we regain our composure and gird our loins for the next challenge, I thought that I would share with you a job that I've been putting off for far too long.

About five years ago I bought an old Lithuanian spinning wheel. It's from the mid 1900's and, like me, looked a bit rough. Once I'd dosed the wood for nasties, I decided that it needed a bit of TLC and decided to wax it. The wax I bought was coloured (bad idea!!) - the colour being Georgian Oak - "fantastic" I thought, "it will really make this wood look lovely". No, it made the wood have a hideous greenish tinge, which isn't that apparent in the photo's, but is there, trust me! Anyway, back the wheel went into its box and has stayed there ever since, just waiting for me to strip that awful wax off and give it a loving coat of oil instead. Ha! finally got round to getting all of the neccessaries and making a start (must be the warm spell).

So now I have stripped away the green and I'm waiting for the wood to dry so I can get in there with my wire wool and wood oils.

The wheel is in its natural state in the photo. It all comes apart without any screws or bolts. It was carried from farm to farm by women when the sheep were shorn. I have a strong suspicion that it was also a flax wheel as the diameter of the wheel is small (plus the distaff gives it away a bit)

Now, Zoe hasn't seen this wheel and , as she has a penchant for giving everything a name I want to keep it in pieces till the last minute so she can't sneak in and name it!

Hopefully by the end of the week it will be up and running again, it's a lovely wheel, a real workhorse. So any spinning wheel questions, just let us know.

Heres Mine (Zoe's) Yes later than expected sorry. Had a busy weekend, the hubbys birthday. Anyway I wanted to have definate colours and colour changes. I blended the greens and blues, then the lilac and pink. I then spun part of each giving random colour changes throughout the bobbin. I did the same with the second bobbin and plied them together. So in parts you get greens/pink greens/blues etc. My mystery fibre was....Angelina fibre. I wanted to add a bit add a bit of sparkle to represent the shimmering of the water. I added it to the pale blue. So the sparkle appears in random places throughout the skein. I didn't want to overdo it. So here it is AGAIN.

Its not had a wash yet but it looks like a DK.

Ok, wool is finally here. I'm putting mine up first (Stella) Hoefully Zoe will put hers up shortly. I have spun two variations of Monet as I couldn't make up my mind which way to go after I had blended it. The first is a blue/green - After blending, I held the two rovings together as I spun them to get a more painterly effect. The second is more of a blue with hints of green, the two rovings blended on the carder and then spun. I don't know which I prefer, but the lucky winner can choose the one they like the best. My mystery fibre? I decided that I wanted shots of brighter colours throughout the yarn and I wanted to give it a bit of sheen too. i chose to space dye a few mawata silk hankies with the pink and lavender I had used on the wool (the dyes attach differently to silk) and then chunk them up and lightly blend them in. This gives the flashes of colour I wanted plus adds a bit of texture to the yarn. My Monet is 14 wraps per inch (approx 4 ply weight) and should knit up on size 3mm - 3.5mm needles.

Dyed and ready for part 2 GIVEAWAY

I washed my fleece last week but stella posted instructions so thought I wouldn't bore you with the details again!

I decided to Kettle dye my fleece, which means basically you dye your fibre in a pan. I used 2 methods. The first is pretty simple. I wanted an even overall colour so I mixed my dye and placed it in the pan of water. Being careful to watch over it, Let it boil on the hob gently for 20mins and done!

The next method I used (in the pic) was to try and get a nice shaded green. I wanted the leafs and dark blue for the shading of the water and foilage. so In my pan I place my fleece added some blue dye and then gentley sprinkled yellow over the top.
This gives a very uneven dye. which is perfect as its all the same colour but with different shades.

And heres the result after 4 hours in the kitchen, I have a selection of greens, blues, pinks and lilac. These are still wet so excuse the towel! The colours are all will be blended together in the next stage. This is the exciting part as this will completly change the colours of the wool!

Me and Stella were overwhelmed with the response for the colours. I really like the greens and blues. Stella was loving all the vibrant combinations. We were really stuck for choice.

I came home tonight and wrote all the colours suggestions down. Then my 8 year old picked one out the bowl.....

And it was none of the colour choices we had discussed LOL. It was Monets Waterlillies. I love and know the painting but really had no idea what colours were involved. So Stella and I have looked on the net at the pics. AND for the colours are

Blues
Purples
Pinks

So we have 4 colours and a painting to use as inspiration. How fab is this! Great thing is it seems to have everyones colour suggestions nearly.

My fleece is clean and ready to go, so the weekend will see the start of the challenge. Let the BATTLE COMMENCE.

Yes, Zoe knows my personal demon colors only too well. Thanks for all of the ideas - I've got a few personal favourites in there so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they keep on coming up. Just posting some pics of the wool as it was washed (please note Lurcher is v. stupid he thinks I have a new friend.... either that or he wants to be a wolf in sheeps clothing... Sorry.... Okay my computer stupidity has got the better of me, so I'll explain where the pictures should be and what they are. Jim is sitting on the fleece before it's been sorted for washing.
Above jim is the sorted, unwashed fleece. Lots of grass and dirt. It's best to wash it little by little, so it's then sorted into 500g pieces and washed (top left). This is done with Orvus paste, a baby bath, V. hot water and a lot of patience! You have to soak the wool. agitating it in any way just makes it felt. The first soak takes out most of the surface dirt. Then it's repeat and repeat until the wool is clean. Then a couple of rinses later, you're ready for the next step. The wool is spun out in an old twin tub I keep outside and finally spread out in a hammock to dry in the sun (ever hopeful of a British summer, but we've had a few nice days up here recently so I grabbed my chance! Then the work begins!!!

Between me and Stella, we have about 18 years experience of spinning. We have spun everything from the BANANA FIBRE to wool Possum to cotton. We thought it would be great to have a challenge. This is where you can help we will both spin the same wool Blue faced Leicester cross HOG which means its a lamb, the first shearing. SOFT BEAUTIFUL and SUPER to knit with. We are going to dye it the same colour, then spin it up. This will be posted each week over 4 weeks or so. You can follow our progress from start to finish. Now the exciting part. Me and Stella live miles from each other so only speak on the phone. So we thought it would be great to see what we come up with, will it be the same or different? Well the Banana is ready to spin, I have blended all the colours together you will still be able to see the variation when spun up. Its fab so soft. I have already been in touch to ask about getting more of this fibre its going to have a fab sheen I can see it knitted or crocheted into a lovely scarf. You could even weave it. Or maybe a nice ribbed hat. I am loving it so far. Would love to hear your opinions. Hope to have the first 100g up at the weekend, it does produce alot of waste though fluff all over the house. It will be fine when its spun, I promise.

Oh its exciting I have some banana fibre so tonight I started handcarding the stuff. Oh its fluffy messy and very sofy and silky.
I have had to cut the fibre to a managable length then hand card it. I will pop it through the drum carder tomorrow. Heres the pics of the progress so far.

Well new year and new blog....well not really I am just going to blog more.
I can't make up my mind what to do or make.
Therefore i THOUGHT it would be really fun to make something from scratch and blog the progress. So watch this space and we can see what it turns into. Just got to charge the camera up now before I can start anything. lol

Well, thats it for another year and another year I still hadn't finished making gifts! Thats it this year I have decided to start early so I am. In fact I am writing a list of people I need to give gifts too TODAY. Then I will make them and tick the names off. You know there is nothing that takes enjoyment out of creating than when your under pressure. So who got handcrafted gifts this year, NO ONE! HAHAHA Thats how much I made this year. Well actually I did make things.

I had no excuse really with the new sites popping up. www.groovycart.co.uk and of course www.misi.me.uk. I won the comp on there and expecting a little scruff handmade bear You gotta check out this ladies work the bears are lovely. You can find her on misi.

Stella did well at making things for presents. I loved my needle case, Kids loved their gifts. I better get off then just wanted to start posting again. Off I go to make a xmas present I only have 12 months left.

Oh making this scarf was a nightmare. You really need to use bamboo needles with Rowan kidsilk haze, but the result is well worth the effort

BEWARE THE BLACK DYE

Tonight I thought I would do some dyeing. I thought I would be really clever and tidy! WHY? I mix my dye no probs I dyed my wool and guess what I looked down my top is covered. My neck has black spots, How???? You guessed it also my hands are now a nice shade of Black! LOL. I guess the moral of the story is wear an apron. Although that wouldn't have stopped the black spots on my neck. Also wear gloves. I nipped to the shop (a bit to late) and brought some tonight. I have done everything to get the dye off and its not shifting. You can bet it will wash out the wool though.

Its been a lovely day today. I completely dried out my fur trim bag.
